Meet Yeira

Yeira has a degree in clinical psychology but is incredibly passionate about cooking and traveling. She is a home cook who loves eating, cooking and meeting people from different cultures. Most of her travels have centered around tasting local cuisine. She is excited to share authentic Puerto Rican cuisine with those visiting Puerto Rico. She took an international cooking course and has been a home cook since 2007, applying what she learned through professional cooking classes and cooking for her family. Yeira is happy to welcome travelers in her home and share her family recipes, knowledge and skills, Puerto Rican history and culinary traditions. Yeira lives in a residential neighborhood of Puerto Rico so it's a great way to get away from the tourist center and get a chance to see how locals live.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (2-4 guests) This is a non-private, small-group cooking class where you may be joined by others! You will be welcomed into Yeira’s beautiful, cozy home filled with color, light and nature! Learn to cook a traditional Puerto Rican meal using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients in her kitchen. Yeira cooks some of her favorite dishes using family recipes and while cooking, shares with you what it is like to live in Puerto Rico as a native. During your 2-hour San Juan cooking class, learn step-by-step how to cook a traditional Puerto Rican meal. Learn to cook 3-4 dishes from scratch during this hands-on San Juan cooking class. A few dishes you might learn to cook are stuffed mofongo, yuca al mojo, mamposteao, Puerto Rican creole sauce, stuffed tostones/regular tostones or rice with Caribbean-style beans. After cooking, enjoy the dishes you helped cook on Yeira’s outdoor terrace. At the end of this immersive cultural and culinary experience, you will have a full stomach, recipes to share with your loved ones, and memorable stories!

Yeira's Puerto Rican cooking class is suitable for couples, families, beginners and children.

Notes: Please note that unlike most Traveling Spoon experiences, this experience is a "shared" experience with other guests and is not private.

Yeira can accommodate lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets in her Puerto Rican cooking class. Please let her know in advance, while booking the experience online. Yeira lives close to Jardines de Caparra train station in Bayamon.

The most beautiful way to start our vacation in Puerto Rico. Yeira was kind and so inviting. She drew the connection between relationships and food while also sharing cultural food history. She provided us with excellent restaurant recommendations for us to try during our trip. Would take another class with her again when visiting Puerto Rico.

My wife and I signed up for this class as part of our babymoon, and the rave reviews I had read about Yeira were not exaggerating in the slightest. We had a wonderful time with each other, the other guests, and with Yeira. She truly took the time to get to know each guest as well as she could, which added a very personal touch to how she led the class. She also put great effort into fostering a friendly social atmosphere with the rest of the guests, and by the end we were all friends! And of course, the food was absolutely delicious. All of the ingredients were very fresh; many of the spices were taken from Yeira's own persoan garden, which is truly as fresh as it gets, and the taste reflected it. The actual class was also very valuable: My wife, who is Puerto Rican herself and has been cooking Puerto Rican food for many years, learned a lot from Yeira and plans to add the many tips and tricks she got to her own cooking in the future. All in all, it truly could not have been a better experience, and I would recommend Yeira to anyone who is interested in learning about Puerto Rican cookery!

Yeira is an artful educator who combines fun and serious meaning behind the preparation of a classic Puerto Rican meal. A gracious hostess, she provides a top-notch adventure I hope to repeat one day.

We had an absolutely amazing experience with Yeira! It was beyond incredible! She uses all fresh ingredients and showed us not only how to cook the recipes that we were making, but to have fun in the kitchen with each other. This is great for couples, families, or friends who are traveling together. It is all about connecting with each other through cooking. She even has a website where she shares more about that and the experiences called Cooknnecting. Everything tasted out of this world...and Yeira kept saying that we were the ones who made it! It was such a homey feel and was exactly what we were hoping for. It's a must do!

We had a great experience having dinner with Yeira. She had excellent communication as we were setting up the experience and overall, all aspects exceeded my expectations. There were 4 adults in our group and everyone loved the food. We had a choice of 5 different menus and all the food we were served was excellent as was the hostess. I would highly recommend this experience to others.
