Meet Christina

Christina grew up in a farming family in a small village in western Greece, where she still gets her local eggs, cheese, organic extra virgin olive oil, dried herbs, and hand-collected sea salts. Christina is passionate about baking traditional phyllo pies made with hand-made dough, a technique she first learned from her grandmother. After attending culinary school, Christina perfected the phyllo technique by working in a local bakery where she expertly created a wide variety of phyllo pies from scratch. Christina is also a licensed tour guide, so if you need any help planning your trip, she is the right person to speak to! She joined Traveling Spoon with the mission to share her knowledge of Greece’s phyllo traditions with as many people as possible in order to help preserve these age-old cooking methods.

Christina lives in a simple apartment in Pangrati, a central yet quiet neighborhood, located about 20 minutes by subway from the historic center of Athens and easily reached by taxi. Her apartment is located on the 5th floor of her building and is accessible by elevator.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-5 guests) Christina serves an authentic Greek meal that showcases seasonal produce with inventive preparations. Your meal might start with an appetizer of locally produced cheese, cold cuts and spreads and then you'll sample her specialty phyllo pies. The meal will continue with dishes like pistachio-crusted chicken served with a savory molasses sauce, seasonal salads of anthotyro (fresh cheese), cherry tomatoes and toasted bread or wild greens collected in the countryside, small fish marinated with fresh herbs, olive-crusted lamb with yogurt sauce, or strapatsada (scrambled eggs with feta and tomatoes).

Cooking experience: (1-5 guests) Learn to prepare authentic Greek phyllo dough from scratch in Christina's kitchen in this Athens cooking class. She will teach you to make the ubiquitous flaky Greek dough - starting with flour and water! - and together you will prepare a traditional pie. She will teach you, step by step, how to make the pie filling using seasonal ingredients like wild spinach and other greens and a variety of fresh cheeses (you might mix the filling in the sink since it is her biggest receptacle!). You mix the dough, learn to roll it into paper-thin sheets on her dining table, and layer the pie with the filling. She will show you how to carefully lay the delicate sheets of phyllo in the pan, which results in a light, crispy pie. Christina will share printed recipes with you so you can recreate the dishes at home.

You can expect the cooking portion of your experience to last about 90 minutes before you sit down to enjoy the meal you helped to prepare. Christina is excited to share her culture through food and offer an authentic/traditional cooking class in Athens. She can also accommodate vegetarian diet on request in her Greek cooking class.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Christina was an excellent hostess with expert knowledge of traditional Greek cuisine. Her lesson on making phyllo dough from scratch was so thorough and inspiring it compelled my wife to seek out a phyllo rolling pin to try to recreate the pastry at home. In short, A++++. Would cook with again.

Great experience. Much better than what I expected. Cristina is a very nice person, very patient, and a great teacher. I can only recommend it! It was really worth it.

Had the most amazing day. Christina the phyllo-dough teacher is professional, witty, smart and kind. Speaks english very well. She knows her history and gave us a tour at the central market in Athens before the cooking class began. Would definitely recommend.

Oh my God! This was by far the most fun I have had in Athens. Christina taught my husband and I (and 3 others in our group) how to prepare authentic Greek phyllo dough from scratch in her kitchen. I want to give this 10/5 stars! Christina took us into her lovely Athens home and treated us like family. By the end we had made the best spanakopita I've had in Greece, shared stories, and had an authentic Athenian experience. Christina is also a tour guide so she will have many recommendations and answers to your questions about the city. I cannot recommend this enough, seriously.

Even though there was a mixup in timing on our part, Christina very gratiously took us in and proceeded to teach some old timers her very successful method for producing phyllo dough. Her hospitality exceeded our expectations and when we left it was like leaving an old friend.

Christina was a gracious host, and wonderful culinary teacher who we had the pleasure of spending some time with on our trip to Greece. We made a delicious classic spinach pie together, phyllo and all, and she was kind enough to include cooking saganaki with us after we mentioned we were curious about making it. She also prepped some side dishes we could enjoy with the main dished which were very tasty as well. What I'll remember most is the welcoming environment she creates, and her thoughtful conversation, and her cat too :)

Christina the best spanakopita class. We are in a habit to learn a new skill every county we travel to. And Athens was no deferent, after searching the local directory we have found Christina Drangana A professional chef with extraordinary passion for phyllo dough. We were very happy to find her as we like the local spanakopita very match. The minute we meet Christina It felt like we are a long time fiends, she is so welcoming and We have some refreshment and a very nice talk about Greece, Athens and the best places to visit in Athens. Next we started with the preparations, it was hand on and we loved it, Christina shared her skills with us and soon we started to roll the phyllo dough ourselves. Christina guide us thru the process, and we end up making a grate spanakopita moist full with green speech and feta cheese. We set to the table enjoy our spanakopita and continue our grate time with Christina Going back home we took with us some of the spanakopita. The next time we are in Athens we will take one of Christina’s food tours. Thank you Christina for the grate time and for the phyllo dough skill, now we make spanakopita for our family and Frind thank to you. Do yourself a favor and meet Christina she will change the way you look at Athens. Thank you Christina we will meet again soon.

Fun and interesting cooking class. My friend and I had the opportunity to take a cooking class with Christina while in Athens and really enjoyed it! Christina was a wonderful host who welcomed us with greek coffee (and a little traditional fun future reading in the coffee) and then taught us how to make a traditional phyllo pastry pie with spinach and feta cheese! It was hands on and we both got to have a try in rolling out the pastry super thin! It was great to have someone so informative as Christina guiding us through it as we learned so much, not just about the pie baking, but greek traditions and history in general. She's so easy to be around and we had great conversations and many laughs. She had prepared a whole delicious meal while we were waiting for the pie to bake, which turned out absolutely delicious! (We had the leftovers for breakfast the next morning ;) ). It was a beautiful experience and we both can absolutely recommend Christina to anyone looking for a fun and interesting greek cooking experience! Thanks so much Christina, until next time! :)

Great Experience. Christina was a good teacher, great english and baking skills—it was a fun time! She followed up with a recipe that she emailed. I would do it (with a different traditional recipe) again.

My wife and I were convinced that Phyllo was something made by magical elves because human hands could create it (well at least not ours). Christina changed all that! We had a wonderful evening at her home talking, laughing, and making spanikopita! It was our first traveling spoon experience but it is only the beginning. We loved it! Thank you Christina for making it a fantastic evening.

We were excited for our first Traveling Spoon experience and it did not disappoint! Christina's apartment is easy to find and she is great at communicating through email and answering any questions. There were four of us and she took time to get to know us before starting the lesson. Aprons and water was provided as she started her lesson. We all had a task to do throughout the lesson while making the phyllo and the filling. She was nice and walked us through all the steps. We would highly recommend this experience!

Christina is not only an experienced professional chef, but also a very heartwarming and friendly host. As a cooking teacher, she patiently taught me how to make phyllo dough step by step, and told me every single tip for making a good Spanakopita. As a host, she made me feel like at home and with my best friend. She selflessly shared everything that she knows about Athens and Greek culture. You can definitely feel her love for Greece and tell her passions for food. I would be happy to recommend Christina's class as I've gained much more from her than just a cooking recipe.
- Yang L July 27, 2018
Christina is such an amazing teacher and host. The spanakopita we made was delicious!! I never thought about making my own phyllo ever, so it was such a fun experience. In addition, Christina brought my partner and I to all the local shops (cheese shop, wine shop, bakery) where we bought things like feta and vegetables and bread for the recipe and for lunch. As a host, she was not only able to talk about food, but also about Greek culture, history and politics -- in case you have questions on it. Christina worked in the restaurant industry years back and is studying to be an official tour guide in Athens - which takes about 2 years, so she really knows her stuff. Cooking and eating with her was such a pleasure - sort of like cooking and eating with a very knowledgeable friend. It was an experience I would not forget and I would recommend her class to anyone.
- EatingWhileTraveling May 06, 2018
Christina was incredibly knowledgeable about food in general and about spanakopita specifically. Even though my wife and I are both experienced cooks, she surprised us with a few great tips for keeping the phyllo dough crisp and manageable. Her instructions for rolling out the dough were so clear that our 12-year-old created a perfect version on his first try. The whole evening and dinner were very enjoyable and we would recommend the experience to anyone.

Hosts typically respond to booking inquiries within 72 hours. If for some reason you have not heard from your host or if you have any questions you can always contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Most of our Traveling Spoon experiences are incredibly family friendly and can accommodate infants and children. If a host is unable to accommodate children that will be noted in the “Notes” section of their profile. Our child pricing policy is children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.
